Selecting the right exhaust fan or blower starts with two requirements: the airflow your hood needs and the duct pressure your system creates. Laboratory Hazards and Ventilation Standards

Laboratories routinely use chemicals, solvents and biological materials that can release hazardous vapors into the air. Fume hoods are a critical safety control, capturing and containing these vapors at the source to protect lab personnel during daily work.

Industry standards such as ANSI/ASHRAE 110 and ANSI/AIHA Z9.5 establish key performance expectations for laboratory ventilation, including:

  • Face velocity (the speed of air entering the fume hood opening): 100 fpm
  • Exhaust plume height: must extend approximately 10 ft above the roof to support safe dispersion of exhaust air.
  • Exhaust discharge velocity: often on the order of 3,000 fpm to reduce re-entrainment, unless a site-specific dispersion analysis demonstrates equivalent performance.

How to select a laboratory exhaust fan or blower

To choose an exhaust fan or blower for a fume hood application, two criteria must be known:

  • Required hood airflow (CFM): based on hood opening and the face velocity your hood is designed to maintain. Plastec provides a Lab Fume Hood Flow Calculator to estimate required airflow using hood dimensions and face velocity.
  • Total duct pressure: the pressure loss created by ductwork, fitting, and connected components. Plastec also offers a convenient Static Pressure Loss Estimator as part of its suite of calculation tools.
